NKP Aircraft

These aircraft are the types that were at NKP while I was there. There were many others through the life of the base. These only represent my experiences there.

The A-1 "Skyraider"

The A-1 Skyraider - a single engine propeller driven aircraft that was heavily used for bombing, close support of ground operations, and Search and Rescue (SAR). This photo shows the A-1, the Fire Department Crash Station (brown tower), and the Control Tower at NKP.

The link below will take you to the Skyraider Association web site. It is full of great information about the A-1. Of special interest are the links pertaining to Maj. Bernard Fisher's mission that earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor, the SAR recordings, and the photos and artwork. New browser windows will open for the Skyraider and USAF Museum pages.

The 0-2 "Skymaster"

The O-2 Skymaster was used by Forward Air Controllers to locate and mark targets for fighter and attack aircraft to hit. It carried white phosphorous rockets on it's wing that were used for that purpose. The rocket would burn on impact and provide a white smoking mark. The FAC pilot was in control of the situation. After marking the target, he controlled the fighter and bomber aircraft. He would tell the bombers where to hit in relation to his smoke. It was very effective. A new browser window will open for the USAF Museum link.
